Celebrating
Black History Month

Presbyterian Moments...

The Rev. John Gloucester, founder of the first African American Presbyterian church, social reformer, and community leader.
In Philadelphia, Gloucester undertook considerable missionary work among the city's African Americans. He first preached in homes, and as the number of his converts increased, he took to preaching at six o'clock in the morning on Sundays at the corner of Seventh and Shippen streets. At times he met with his informal congregation at a local school. In May 1807 Gloucester formally organized the First African Presbyterian Church under the General Assembly's Committee on Missions. Meeting at Keystone Hall on Sixteenth and Lombard streets, Gloucester's was the first African American Presbyterian church in the United States.
