HUNGER ACTION WORK GROUP

  Gleaning

Gleaning is the traditional Biblical practice of gathering crops that would otherwise be left in the fields to rot or be plowed under after harvest: Because the food is unmarketable, some growers allow crews of gleaners to pick what is left after harvest to donate to those who are needy. (http://www.endhunger.org/gleaning_network.htm)

Opportunities for gleaning are available through the Society of St. Andrew.  This organization operates a statewide, volunteer-driven Gleaning Network in North Carolina that coordinates with local farmers, thousands of volunteers, and food providing agencies. Volunteers can be from all age groups.

Send them an email to find out about their upcoming gleaning opportunities.

MISSION OPPORTUNITY: YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! ~
** Do you live near the Davidson Area? (or don't mind travelling to Davidson!)
** Are you available once every 4-6 weeks on a Saturday afternoon?
** Do you enjoy visiting a farmer's market?

Then you are just what we're looking for!  We are looking for a few good men and women (perfect for kids too!) to pick up donated produce from the Davidson Farmer's Market
at 12:00 PM on Saturdays and deliver it to one of our nearby agencies in need. How often each volunteer goes depends on how many volunteers sign-up! So, please sign-up today! Thanks for all your help!

LOOKING FOR FIELD LEADERS!
If you love to glean and have participated in at least two gleanings, you might want to consider being a field leader. Field leaders are vital to Society of St. Andrew continuing and expanding its gleaning opportunities.
We can't glean without them!

On the day of gleaning, Field Leaders:
• meet the farmer to receive gleaning instructions and field location
• welcome all volunteers
• pass along the farmer's gleaning instructions to the group
• answer any questions
• glean with the volunteers
• record how much produce has been gleaned
• coordinate the loading of delivery vehicles
• report back to the gleaning coordinator (that's me!)

Prior to the day of the gleaning, the gleaning coordinator:
• makes all gleaning arrangements with the farmer
• recruits all the volunteers, trucks and recipients
• provides the field leader with all the information that is needed for the gleaning

A gleaning calendar is provided to the Field Leaders and they choose their own dates they wish to supervise.

If you are interested in learning more about being a Field Leader please let me know!
Thank you for volunteering!
